The Audit Commission have completed their 2008 Annual Audit and Inspection of Runnymede Borough Council’s services.
The Commission’s general observations regarding the Council were as follows:
► Financial targets were met during the 2006/2007 period, although the Council’s financial future is under considerable pressure as a result of central government rate-capping. We have a secure financial position at present, yet these financial pressures may impact upon range of discretionary services the Council can offer in the future.
► The Council provides “excellently performing services to the public” with above average performance in 47% of performance indicators as opposed to a national average of 32%.
► Performance in housing is strong with “tenant satisfaction high” and active steps being taken to ensure that all homes reach the Decent Homes Standard. 67% of performance indicators in relation to housing showed improvement, compared to a UK average of 32%.
► In terms of environmental health services and planning and development control Runnymede is ranked first out of 381 local authorities for improvement in performance in the past three years.
► The Council’s financial reserves increased from £3.3 million in 2005/6 to £7 million in 2006/7.
Nationally, the Audit Commission rated only 17% of Councils as “excellent”. Runnymede is one of them.
